Lac du Flambeau HOPE New Year’s Sobriety Powwow
tw: privilege, suicide
So I’m looking at the WJFW channel 12 article discussing Cody’s suicide in jail..and on the fb page a white woman says “thank you” and that “all criminals should just do this and save the trouble of hurting people”…
First off, FUCK YOU.
Second. You don’t know her situation what she was going through. She was a young girl falling into a gang life where she was finding her only support. She was into drugs and knew one day she wanted to take her own life.
Third. Never be a white privileged girl thanking a young native girl in trouble for hanging herself. While they didn’t release her race, it doesn’t give validity to the fucked up comment you leave about promoting suicide.
Fourth. You are a privileged white girl. You have a fucking acknowledged existence. imagine the stigmas for native folks. alcoholics, lazy, etc. imagine that on top of the stereotypes for native women, being cheap and getting knocked up early. Add that on to our historical trauma (her death fell on the day Abraham Lincoln permitted the largest mass hanging of native people in US history). we are such a small population we are rarely acknowledged in statistical studies, and our reservations are identified as third world countries.
now put that on the shoulders of a 17 year old girl with depression who was just arrested.
again. FUCK YOU.

Weekly Beading Collective in Lac du Flambeau!
Check out the Woodland Indian Art Center in Lac du Flambeau WI!! They have weekly beading collectives on Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm! Don’t know how to bead?? Well come to the collective and learn how!! Also feel free to bring current projects to work in a great community with fellow artists! :)
Nelly Furtado’s new song “Big Hoops” featuring Native American hoop dancers and fancy shawl dancers.
Opinions? Song is interesting but I feel there should’ve been more indigenous airtime. Fancy shawl dancers have amazing footwork and hoop dancers are just such unique dancers to observe.
And although Nelly has changed quite significantly from her “I’m like a bird” days, i still admire seeing accurate native portrayal in the media.
And another talking point I’d like to open folks up to is this: I’ve read some comments saying Nelly Furtado is using the native folks as “accessories” in her video but for me it also kinda shows folks we’re still around which, for some folks, is necessary to vocalize.

I don’t care if he’s making too much noise or whatever caused you to stop him and arrest him (edit: he later received a ticket for “disorderly conduct”), but you don’t ever fucking stop someone from playing a drum and showing their love for their own culture. it’s the most disrespectful fucking thing you can do to anyone.
Please reblog.
